FAYETTEVILLE TEEN-LED MURAL
PUBLIC ART · YOUTH MENTORSHIP · CREATIVE PRODUCTION
FAYETTEVILLE, WV
As Art Consultant for Community Connections, Inc., I partnered with the Fayetteville Prevention Coalition to lead a teen-driven public art project centered on creativity, prevention, and community pride.
Before painting began, I met with participating teens through Google Meet to brainstorm the people, places, and activities that made their hometown special. Their ideas included kayaking, bowling, fishing, the town’s railroad heritage, and local flora. It became the inspiration for a large-scale mural featuring the message, “Fayetteville Has Healthy Fun.”
One of the teens developed the final mural design in Procreate, and I mentored her through the digital design process and the transition from concept to a full-scale public artwork. Once the design was complete, I facilitated weekly painting sessions on-site, guiding the group through preparation, scaling, painting techniques, teamwork, and project completion.
The project created more than a mural, it gave the teens hands-on experience developing and leading a meaningful creative initiative in their own community. Since its completion, members of the group have continued building on those skills by independently facilitating additional mural projects in Fayetteville and Oak Hill.
